Chapter 11 - Rynar

If I returned to Estaria tomorrow and asked someone what a beauty standard was, they wouldn't know. Everyone took pride in their appearance, so there were fashion trends and traditional styles, but no one was considered lesser than another because their body looked different—except for me.

My differences ran deeper as a hybrid. I looked every bit like an Elderling except for my dark eyes—proof that, at my core, I wasn't a pure-blooded Elderling. That was what bothered purebloods.

Regardless, Elderlings were able to see life force and auras. We could see who a person was at their core without exchanging words, which meant that a judgment based on one’s outer shell was obsolete. Outward beauty was there to be admired, sure, but it wasn’t what was important.

That wasn’t the case in this mortal realm.

Watching Gia sleep, I held my hand out to touch her aura. It expanded and retracted with each breath, but it was as bright as when I first saw her. A great wrong had been done to her when she was born and her father had abandoned her. Not being accepted as she was had caused insecurities and anguish that dimmed her light.

She deserved better.

Gia’s pain was something I knew intimately. I had faced the same bullying and judgment in Estaria. There, I was the closest thing some women had to the experience of being with someone from another species. It was thrilling to them, but that was where my value ended, and so did their kindness.

When I’d first arrived in this realm, I watched my sister with her mate and the other mated couples in the pack, and it made me wonder if I’d ever find what they had.

Would the werewolf goddess or the goddess of life bless me with a fated mate, or would I find someone to love me as I was? Here, many accepted all life, all species. The Silverdawn Pack understood that all species were meant to be cherished and welcomed. To others, like Eliza, the pack was weaker for it.

She was wrong.

Moving a strand of Gia’s hair from her face, I leaned over and kissed her lips. She didn't wake, and I went back to lying down.

The Silverdawn Pack's strength was growing and would continue to do so because it didn't follow old rules of seclusion and division. If a werewolf could choose a human as their mate and vice versa, I was eager to know if I’d be accepted.

I was, by the pack, but could I find love?

For the past couple of years, living in Wolfcreek and then traveling the world, I’d encountered the same thing I did in Estaria. I was a mythical being revealed to be real. I’d met my fair share of women who saw me as only that and couldn’t see beyond it.

Gia didn’t see me that way.

Our meeting was rocky, considering the circumstances, but here we were. She didn't focus excessively on what I was after learning the truth and instead she’d trusted me.
